6 Dubai brunches for summer
Back in the old routine, huh? With the remains of summer stretching out before us, it is only right and appropriate that we look Fridays square in the face and say: feed me. Post-Eid, the brunch will be back on its perch as the weekend entertainment of choice and there are some new arrivals and some old favourites to provide the much-needed indoor entertainment for the next couple of months or so. Here are some of the more interesting options available from next weekend onwards. Get stuck in.
Authentically American Saturday Brunch
American food does seem uniquely suited to weekends, especially when there is nothing on the agenda other than sitting around eating with friends and family – and the success of several new US-style eateries does underline the point.
Latitude in Jumeirah Beach Hotel has caught this welcome bug and has just launched its new American-themed Saturday brunch, which has goodies such as stuffed jalapenos, beef brisket, chicken wings, burgers, smoked sliders and sweet potato chips. The desserts are the calorific, guilt-inducing indulgence you’d expect, too. Bring a group and dive in.

The monthly brunch at The Act – the world’s highest supper club, they say – kicks off on July 15 with the combination of food, music and performance on which its reputation has been built. The cuisine is Peruvian-Japanese fusion, the music is provided by DJs Jean B and Sam Stark, while the The Act’s in-house acrobats and dancers will keep things interesting between courses. The price includes all house beverages, and if you want to hang around, the party will continue until 9pm.

It’s time to forget about the disappointments of the Euros (for England and the two Irelands, at least) and head down to Girders and remind yourself of what those damp islands are still very good at. This brunch kicks off again on July 15 and you can enjoy plenty of roasted and grilled meats with all manner of house specialty sauces and sides. There are also warm chocolate brownies to finish. See? Things are never really that bad, are they?
Where: JA Ocean View Hotel, Jumeirah Beach Residences
When: Fridays, 1pm-4pm
This afternoon affair starts at a very civilised 3pm on Fridays and carries on until 6pm, leaving you with plenty of evening left to enjoy once you’re done – which may involve simply hanging around the hotel ruminating on what you’ve just enjoyed. The Shanghai Grand brunch includes one choice of speciality dish, a green market bowl salad, chicken yakitori and vegetable tacos, as well as unlimited dim sum and maki plus, to finish, a selection of desserts.
Wakame‘s slick interior – gold, candles, a forest’s worth of wood – is the ideal retreat from the heat, and the whole mood is enlivened by video DJ Gaby, who showcases her mix of classic MTV videos. There are also great deals to take advantage of between 6pm-9pm.
Where: Wakame, Sofitel Dubai Downtown

The Prohibition era in the States in the 1920s and early 1930s has become a fertile ground for culinary and entertainment inspiration in Dubai of late; the word “speakeasy” seems to have accompanied half of the city’s new bars this year alone. Prime68, the signature steakhouse in the JW Marriott Marquis, offers its own take with a menu that is paired with “spiked classics” and live jazz music. Main highlights include braised Creekstone short ribs and salmon on cedar plank with herbs.
