UAE lifts ban on Qatar-based beIN Sports channel
If you were flicking through your television channels on Saturday, you may have noticed that beIN Sports is back.
The UAE lifted the ban on the Qatar-based broadcaster over the weekend, and Etisalat sent out a text message to customers to inform them that the channel was available with immediate effect.
The message read: "Dear customer, we would like to advise that starting 22 July the beIN package will be available to customers and normal charges will apply. The provision of the beIN package will be subject to an ongoing review."
Up until Saturday the sports channel, which is a subsidiary of the Al-Jazeera network, had been unavailable in the UAE since June 5 of this year. The block was due to news that the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt had cut all diplomatic ties with Qatar.
However, the move to re-instate the channel followed hours after Qatar's ruler said that they are ready to begin talks to resolve the diplomatic crisis. "We are open to dialogue to resolve the outstanding problems," so long as Qatar's "sovereignty is respected," Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani said.
