There’s a saying, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” We’ll let you make your mind up on this one. How would you like to escape the seemingly never-ending slog of long haul flights and jet from Dubai to New York in just 22 minutes? Yes, us too.

A new hypersonic jet concept by Canadian industrial designer Charles Bombardier lays out plans for a luxury business jet that can reach speeds of 12,427 miles per hour. That means New York to London in a staggeringly quick 11 minutes.

But remember what we said about things being too good to be true? The catch is that, in order to travel almost 12 times faster than Concorde, it would need to be made of material which could withstand incredible heat and pressure.

According to Forbes, the so-called “Antipode” would take off using rocket boosters from an airfield. After reaching 40,000 feet with the help of accelerators, they would detach and fly safely back to the airfield, while the Antipode continues its flight.

But before you start gearing yourself up for a trip to New York, there’s a catch. In fact, there are multiple catches. The first is that the Antipode design would fit up to 10 people, making it a private jet, and a very exclusive one at that. Secondly, it’s just a design at the moment – and although it’s possible that it could be made in the future, in the meantime it’s more of a “concept” than a planned jet that will become a reality.

Still, the innovation is impressive, and any ideas to cut down flight times are welcome with us.
