No it isn’t science fiction, it’s real. Now we all know Dubai is famed for doing the spectacular, but we doubt anyone will ever top this: building a city on Mars.

Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced the incredible plans at the World Government Summit, saying he wants to build a miniature city on the Red Planet in the next 100 years. The project has been named Mars 2117.

"There are no limits to the imagination and aspirations of human beings," he tweeted.

“The new project is a seed that we plant today, and we expect future generations to reap the benefits, driven by its passion to learn to unveil a new knowledge…The landing of people on other planets has been a longtime dream for humans. Our aim is that the UAE will spearhead international efforts to make this dream a reality.”

It is thought that phase one of this mega project will see the preparation of the human cadres able to achieve the scientific breakthrough need for the arrival of humans on Mars. An Emirati scientific team will kick this all off, though soon joined by the top brains from around the world.

A couple of years ago Dubai announced its first Mars plans – the Hope probe will leave the earth in 2020 and come up with the data needed to properly study the atmosphere in Mars.  Going at 126,000 kilometres an hour, it will take around 200 days to make the 600 million mile journey. That probe will orbit Mars until around 2023 though could stay out for a couple of years more.

And after, plans for Mars 2117 will start taking shape. Various phases will include research into mobility, housing, energy and food – plus it is hoped by then, finding a faster way to get to Mars.
