Are you planning on visiting somewhere new this year?

Sure, it might be great to head to the same resort over and over, developing a routine and getting to know the staff and fellow guests, but variety can be the spice of life.

January is known to be the best month to book flights, but that’s no good if you have no idea where to book them to.

Not to worry, though – we’ve done the hard work for you.

We’ve looked at cheap return flights on SkyScanner and average temperatures on Holiday-Weather.com to find the best options for catching some sun at any time of the year.

Each of the locations listed is among the cheapest available with an average temperature of 22 degrees Celsius or higher for the month in question*, and it leaves us with a pretty wide spread of options across the world.

*All months used are 2018 with the exception of January, where we have looked at 2019 prices. All figures correct as of the time of writing

January - Accra, Ghana

It’s no surprise that you’ll need to head south for January sun, but you don’t need to go as far as the southern hemisphere. Ghana’s capital is one of West Africa’s big tourist areas with beachfront bars and a buzzing city centre.

February - Sal, Cape Verde

Cape Verde is warm all year round, and flights to Sal seem cheaper than other parts of the island group. If you want to spend a week on a sun-lounger on the beach, there are plenty of worse options.

March - Banjul, Gambia

Gambia has quite a few benefits: English is an official language (so no phrasebooks) and it’s 26 degrees in March. Yeah, I know.

April - Muscat, Oman

When people talk about taking trips to the Gulf states, Oman can play second fiddle to some of its neighbours. While you’re there, you’ll be able to head out to the coast along the Gulf of Oman, and visit one of the world’s largest mosques.

Flights from: AED210

Average Temperature: 30 degrees

May - Cairo, Egypt

Egypt has been a popular holiday destination for tourists for some time, and when you look at the combination of price and heat you can see why. Flights are short, too, and once you’re there it would be a shame not to visit the Pyramids at Giza, just to the south of the city.

Flights from: AED960

Average Temperature: 25 degrees

June - Milan, Italy

Milan might not quite be as warm as the southern part of Italy, but it’s a very tourist-friendly city throughout the year - and especially in the toasty summer months.

Flights from: AED2,256

Average Temperature: 23 degrees

July - Genoa, Italy

The perfect spot for spending time along the Italian Riviera, Genoa is surprisingly affordable, even in the high season. Once there, you can choose between the cobbled beaches, renovated port and bright piazzas - or just visit all three.

Flights from: AED1,566

Average Temperature: 24 degrees

August - Madrid, Spain

While more attention might be paid to Spain’s islands and coastline, Madrid is a great destination for those in search of a warm city break over the summer. It’s deceptively hot as the season winds down, too.

September - Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona has long been a popular tourist spot over the summer, but it remains warmer than most European cities. With average temperatures around 22 degrees, September won’t necessarily be too late to head to the beach.

October - Budapest, Hangary

Hungary’s bustling capital city is popular with all sorts of travellers. Walk into the likes of Szimpla (one of our favourite bars) and you’ll find backpackers, stag dos, older couples and solo travellers keen to enjoy Budapest’s diverse attractions. Make sure you try out the baths – there are plenty of different options to suit the nature of your trip, with chilled out traditional types as well as party baths that you’ll need to book quite far in advance.

Flights from: AED919

Average Temperature: 12 degrees

November - Phuket, Thailand

There isn’t much that Phuket doesn’t have. Rainforest, mountains and the Andaman Sea pull in masses of tourists every year. It’s so large that you’d easily forget that its an island, meaning that there are plenty of bars and restaurants to explore. Out top tip is to pick a luxury resort away from the crowds if you fancy some r&r.

December - Chennai, India

If you fancy a change of scenery in the lead-up to Christmas, Chennai has all the heat of a Dubai spring in December. With a population of more than 7 million, there’s plenty on offer at all times.
