A new ‘smart crossing’ for pedestrians is set to launch in Dubai
We all know the struggle – the green man is lit up at the pedestrian crossing, but as soon as you take your first few steps onto the road he starts flashing. Do you turn around and run back? Or do you risk it and speed walk to the other side, hoping you’ll make it to the safety of the pavement before the red man appears and drivers start beeping their horns at you? “I’M GOING AS FAST AS I CAN!”
Anyway, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has solved that problem. The Smart Pedestrian Signal, which was revealed earlier this year, is being displayed at this year's Gitex. The technology uses sensors to detect pedestrians moving across the road, enabling it to adjust the signal time to allow you to cross the road safely.
“The initial results of the trial operation on Al Saada Street showed an improvement in the operational efficiency and the level of traffic safety, following extensive and accurate statistical studies," said Maitha bin Adai, CEO of Traffic & Roads Agency. "Expanding the project to other areas of Dubai is governed by a host of parameters such as the variation in traffic and pedestrian intensity and the addition of new facilities nearby crossings.”
The technology will be rolled out in trials across Dubai, with locations including City Walk, Al Muraqqabat, Al Barsha and more.
This is just one of the road safety improvements that Dubai is looking into. The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) is looking to fit an automatic accident alert signal into all cars imported into the UAE by 2019.
In the event of an accident, the eCall system will automatically connect the vehicle to the emergency authorities. That’s not all - the system as has the ability to sense to magnitude of the accident and based on the requirements and severity will contact the nearest emergency centre.
During this time, it will send your geographical location as well as other relevant data. And, regardless of whether the call is made automatically or manually, the eCall service will provide communication between the vehicle and the emergency centre staff, which will allow passengers to answer questions about their condition.
